Manabharana Is Not Malay (Manabharana Bukan Melayu)

In recent times, an alarming narrative has emerged within the Malaysian blogosphere, suggesting a historical event that appears to be a misinterpretation or perhaps a deliberate misinformation campaign. The claim revolves around a so called Malay prince named Manabharana from Srivijaya, purportedly attacking and conquering the Chola kingdom. This misleading story has gained traction and is spreading like wildfire across various social media platforms. The need to address and rectify such inaccuracies is crucial not only for the sake of historical accuracy but also for fostering a responsible and informed online community. To delve into the matter, it is essential to clarify that historical records reveal the existence of multiple individuals named Manabharana throughout history. However, a nuanced understanding reveals that all these figures were Tamils (Damila) hailing from the Pandya kingdom, with references to their exploits documented in Tamil inscriptions and Sri Lankan chronicles...

The Paravars

Conversion of the Paravars by Francis Xavier in 1542. During the visit of Francis Xavier the Paravars were using two different types of boat for net fishing, which he called the vallam and the toni

The Paravars are one of the ancient tribes which can still be found in Tamil Nadu. They are numerous in areas close to the sea. We can find them in the coastal regions of Ramanathapuram, Toothukudi (Tuticorin) and Kanyakumari districts.

Works in the Tamil Sangam literature which refer to the lives of the Paravars include Ettuthokai, Pathupaattu, Ahananuru, Maduraikkanci and Pattinappaalai.

Paravars are also known as Parathavar or Bharathar. They are believed to be related to my clan, the Maravars. The Maravars lived in the palai (desert) region of the country and the Paravars lived in the neythal (coast) region. (More research should be done to verify if the Maravars and Paravars are related)

Paravars used to be involved in the pearl trade during the era of the Pandyan kings. As coastal people, they were deeply involved with the sea. The Portuguese called the area where the Paravars lived as Costa da Pescaria, the Land of the Pearls.

Tamil comedian Chandrababu (1927-1974), born as Joseph Panimayadas Rodriquez.

Simon Casie Chitty grouped the Paravar occupations in 1834 into thirteen categories, these being: headmen, cloth dealers, coral divers, sailors, pearl divers, chank divers, cloth packers, turtle fishers, porpoise fishers, fishers for shark and other species, palanquin bearers, peons and crab fishers.

The Ceylon Gazetter by Simon Casie Chitty. Published by Cotta Church Mission Press, 1834.

The Paravars know the sea better than the other Tamil tribes and they have exceptionally good navigational skills. It will be not be surprising if the Paravars were the backbone of the ancient Tamil navy!

Our Lady of Snows Shrine Basilica(Snows Basilica) at Tuticorin, was built during 16th  century in the Portuguese architecture. In 1542 St. Francis Xavier visited the shrine (Tuticorin) to catechize the paravars, the indigenous people of the Pearl Fishery Coast, and to strengthen them in Christian faith.

The Paravars are among the earliest tribes to be converted into Christianity. According to historical sources, Muslim merchants like the Maraikayars began to control the pearl trade. Furthermore, there were many infighting among the kings and chieftains 500 years ago. The Paravars main source of income was at stake.

This gave the Portugese a golden opportunity to spread Christianity and also take control. They made a deal with the Paravars.

"Convert to Christianity, become subjects of Portugal. We will protect you from the Muslims"

By the end of the 16th century, almost every Paravar became a Christian. The Paravars who embraced Christianity were given the surnames of the missionaries. This is still being used till today.

Among the surnames used by the Paravar Christians are Fernando, Fernandez, Motha, Mascarenhas, Victoria, Miranda, Devotta, De Cruz, De Souza, Gomez, Dalmeida, Vaz, Desoyza, Rodrigo, Pereira and Rodriguez.

Augustine Pereira, son of Ignatius Xavier Pereira and Maria Michelammal was born on 11th February 1854 at Tuticorin. He was the Founder of congregation of  Immaculate Conception.

I am sure most of you would have a Tamil Christian friend in Malaysia with one of these surnames. Fernando and Pereira is quite common. These people are probably descendants of the ancient Paravars who converted 500 years ago.

Like the rest among the global Tamil diaspora, the modern Paravars can be found all over the globe.

  3. hi Sharmalan,
it is good to know that you know lot about paravars. there are lot of other family names are common among maravar and paravar. like 'pattankattiyar', 'Rayan' etc.
my great grand father name is manath thevan pattankattiyar.
i told my marava friend's that, the fish flag and 'meen atchi ie rule of fish' is belong to paravas and they are arguing that they are pandiyars.
after long time i found that you are the only one among maravars accepted that paravars are blood related to maravars.
when great muthu ramalinga thevar asked paravas to join the mukulathoor, our leaders didn't joined. don't know the reason.
when Thevar proudly claimed that, we have army (maravar) and Navy( paravar) too.
he clear told other tribes that we are the rules of land and sea.
but sadly no maravars don't know parava blood relation.
still south tamil nadu, during parava marriage, there is a sadangoo called 'pangali murai' means, maravars come to the parava marriage and give gift to the newly weds.
hope the educated maravar know about this history. i hope you will work to make
unity among maravars and paravars, this is the only job was not done by the Great leader.

One of the reason why Maravar-Paravar unity is difficult to achieve is due to religious differences. The Maravar majority are still Hindus while the Paravar majority have become Christians.

In 1905, Seenikuppan Padayachi from Ramnad built a church in the barren islet, called St. Antony’s, for fishermen to take rest and dry their nets or seek shelter during times of cyclones. This Seenukuppan Padayachi is definitely a Paravar and not Vanniyar (Palli).

I'm Andez from Kanyakumari,I am just aware of the "Padayatchi" title among paravars. Many of relatives use the Padayatchi title, mostly hindu paravars are using the title. And I have heard about the "Pangali Murai" sandangu and Maman,Machan murai of Maravars and paravars. They use to say, when paravars go to sea for fishing, they leave the women and children under the protection of Maravars and Maravars keep guard of the Paravar families and assets.Maravars treat Paravar women as their own sisters and call paravars as Machan and Mappilai.Few Thevars and Paravars call each other "Pothi","the great grand ancestor".I know a family of Paravars in Veerapandian pattanam, with a surname "Azhgiya Pandithevar",they were court poet of Sethupathi kings of ramnad. It is very obvious that a non-thevar can't use a "Thevar" title in Sethupathi's court.
Maravars and Paravars are Thevars of Pandian kingdom. If we join together,we can create a strong vote bank too.Apart from the religious barrier we should unite.Paravars should search their roots and lost relationships.Maravars should acknowledge Paravars.Only through unity we can rule again..

  12. Hi friends sukumar from tiruchengodu namakkal district. Vanniyars are the single largest community of tamilnadu. Vanniyars are commonly referred as vanniyars kula Kshatriya but they use various caste titles such as vanniya gounder; vanniya kander; padayatchi; padayatchi gounder; nayakar as I know very well. Vanniyars are based on agriculture only. They live in tamilnadu Kerala Karnataka and andhra. In andhra they referred as agni kula Kshatriya. They are generally in BC but they did very big protest in 1979-80 and successfully moved themselves into MBC in order to uplift them in many aspects mainly in education. They were in politics also gaining power successfully and you can see many vanniyars ministers like other communities. They were brave soldiers in ancient days. In the term padayatchi padai refers army atchi means ruling they ruled the army in ancient days. In tamilnadu vanniyars and thevars are traditionally considered as Kshatriya community since both the community peoples are more involved in army and they were soldiers when compared to any other community especially in tamilnadu. Both are doing well. The common uniqueness between them is they were brave and they were soldier's in ancient days and traditionally they are agricultural basis. One beauty is they lived in different region but still now also their relationship is strong enough. In dharmapuri Bangalore Pondicherry Salem and in some part of kongu regions they referred as vanniya gounder or padayatchi gounder. In paramathi velur they referred as kander; in some part of kongu region they referred as simply padayatchi. In chennai they referred as nayakar. In Karnataka they referred as gounder and also in Kerala they referred as padayatchi gounder. In andhra they referred as agni kula Kshatriya and they use subtitle as vanniya reddiar. Friends since I belong to vanniya kula Kshatriya community I gained all these info from my father and also by referring many articles. Thk u for all

Perhaps more research on the Sambuvarayars and Kadavarayars can throw some light. Back then, they were known as Palli instead of Vanniyar.

We are not SC, we are MBC category, sufficient evidence can be found in tamil literature that paravar were early pandiyans and hoisted their fish flag for their dynasty, then padiyan dynasty had moved from KORKAI port city to Madurai (koodal nagar{history name}), Tamil Literature has revealed paravar war abilities example pandiyan nedunchezhiyan thalaiyanamganam war, vanniyar were known as palli in history I have read one article related this. padayatchi surname may be belong to vanniyar caste, why hindu paravars using this name in kanyakumari district I don’t know. Now a day’s even nadars caste also tracing their origin from pandiyan dynasty without any history support because their population is more in southern districts that is vote bank politics.

    4. I belong to Pandha Mutti Padayachi or Pandha Mutti Palli. Guys there is a lot we can learn from castes. Unfortunately it has been politicised and used merely for economical and social discrimination. A community becomes low class when one of the following happens.
      1. The community which loses in a war.
      2. The community which migrates because of famine and drought.

Say, Padayachi community is not a low class community in the northern Tamilnadu whereas in the Kongu region it is because the Kongu Vellalars are dominant there.

To know the real Tamil history don't look into the history books. Look into your caste, rituals and elders from your caste.

      Connection between Paravars and Padayachis.

As you know Paravars or Barathavars profession is fishing, pearl diving, seafaring, navy, sea trade etc.

Padyachis are titles given to those who rule the military units.

Barathavars, Mallars, Maravars sometimes may have the title Padayachis when they actually rule the military units of a kingdom.

All Pandha Mutti Padyachi or Pandha Mutti Palli trace their ancestry to Ariyalur and Perambular region. They have their original Kuladeivam in these areas.

My father when he was young heard a legend from his great grandfather that we were originally Barathavars or Paravars. Once god came to this world and was providing boons to the people. Our ancestors Barathavars asked for lots of gold and to receive those alms they used their fishing nets ('Madi' in Tamil) and as you know almost all of the gold passed through the fishing net and only a few left. That is the reason our community is not able to save money irrespective of how much we earn.

I can't say if god came or not but from this we can say we were Barathavars. Barathavars became Padyachis.

I also found another interesting fact. In 700 AD Arab traders used to visit Tamilnadu and trade with Tamils. During those times they mixed with the sea faring Barathavars and formed a Muslim sect called Lebbai muslims.

To my surprise there is a place called Lebbai Kudi near my native which was and is full of Pandha Mutti Padayachi (previously Bharathavars or Paravars).

But it is good to know that Paravars in the south use Padayachi title.

I am still trying to figure out the meaning of Palli. Some say Palli means Shepherd. I think that is either incorrect or it is equivalent to idaiyan.

'Idaiyanum Palliyum Iraiththa Pulam Savi" is a popular saying. Meaning the land cultivated by a Shepherd and a Palli is waste.

Because i read in wikipedia that there is a possibility of Paravar's having gained Portuguese surnames as a result of marriage..
    Is that true?

  17. It is essential to stress the fact that both Maravars and Paravars shared the Pandyan throne during different ages which is evident from the fact that Pandyan emblem had both "Bull" and "Fish" ensignia. They had deep blood bonded ties during both the Early Pandyan Kingdom and the later Pandyan Kingdom. Thiru. V. Kanakasabhai also reinstates that in his book "Tamils eighteen hundred years ago". I would say that both Maravars and Paravars in the olden times atleast during the Pandyan era recognised that they are sibling clans. It is also critical to notice that there are little or no recorded conflicts between these two clans right from the Pandyan era until now.

  21. Some important timeline of the history of how the Pandiyas sect turned into Paravar community

3rd century B.C. Arittapatti inscription throws light on Jainism
A rare 3rd century B.C. Tamil Brahmi inscription found near Madurai recently has brought to light the fact that not only Pandyas and Cheras but the chiefs of the coastal region in the State also patronised Jainism in the early period. The discovery by a team of epigraphists, who undertook a survey at Arittapatti in Melur taluk, is a remarkable evidence of history of early Tamil politics, culture and language, State Archaeology department sources said here recently. ........The inscription, engraved as a single line with 33 letters and running for 3.10 metres, reads as follows: ilanjiy vel mapparavan makan emayavan nalmuzhaukai kotupithavan. It means, "Emayavan, son of Mapparavan, chief of Ilanji, has caused the carving of this auspicious cave." ......... One of the Sangam works, `Madurai Kanchi' refers to the Paravar defeated by Padyan Nedunchezhian. Even the Velvikudi copper plate speaks of the defeat suffered by Tenparavar at the hands of a Pandya king, the sources point out. All this evidence makes clear that the Paravars were the chiefs of the coastal region and they ruled their areas as subordinates of the Pandyas of the Sangam age.

  22. 1310-1311 AD The Delhi Sultanate ruler Alauddin Khalji sent an army led by Malik Kafur to the southernmost kingdoms of India. After subjugating the Hoysalas, Malik Kafur invaded the Pandya kingdom (called Ma'bar in Muslim chronicles) in present-day Tamil Nadu, taking advantage of a war of succession between the Pandya brothers Vira and Sundara. After the death of the king Maravarman Kulashekhara, his sons Vira and Sundara Pandya were engaged in a war of succession. According to Alauddin Khalji's courtier and chronicler Amir Khusrau, the Delhi army had captured 512 elephants, 5,000 horses and 500 manns of gold and precious stones from Pandiya and Hoysala kingdoms during their raids. https://books.google.com/books?id=2rL1RtLr2KkC&pg=PA4#v=onepage&q&f=false

The Indian confusion - Race, Caste, Clan & Surnames

Before you read, keep in mind that this was not written with the intention to divide the people. It was written with the intention to explain the meaning of each group. The write up on my journey in Bali is still in progress. I have to transfer some image files in order to upload them. So I thought of writing about the biggest confusion in the Indian Malaysian community. It is a sensitive one too. But clarification should be given. Else, when are we going to understand it? To my friends of other races who happened to read my blog, this will probably be enlightening as many may not be aware of our demographics. First of all, there are two main classification for us in Malaysia. Indian & Ceylonese. Many assume it to be a homogenous race like Chinese, but it isn't. The Chinese have many languages but they have a common language called Mandarin. They also have one writing script. This is what makes the over 1 billion Chinese worldwide as a homogenous race. Dogs of Tamil Nadu

Pictures taken from Google. Credit goes to the various people who uploaded them. I apologise for not being able to identify the original owner of the pics. Whenever we speak of dogs, we tend to focus on the European breeds.  This is due to their popularity and demand. Unknown to many, India has about 88 native dog breeds. Six of these breeds are from the southern state of Tamil Nadu. Most of these dogs from Tamil Nadu evolved naturally. That makes them more suitable to the hot climate in the south. Furthermore, these dogs require less medical attention as their immune system is stronger, making them less prone to disease which are common among the European breeds. In Tamil Nadu, we can find breeds like the famous Rajapalayam, Kombai, Alangu Mastiff, Chippiparai, Kanni and Malayeri. Both the Alangu Mastiff and Malayeri are now extinct. How To Find Your Kula Deivam?

*DISCLAIMER-Article written from a believer's perspective.  One of the most common questions I get from my readers is  "How do I find my Kula Deivam?" Kula Deivam is the patron deity of your lineage. Some families have more than 1 deity.  The easiest way to know your Kula Deivam is of course by knowing the ancestral village of your patrilineal lineage (father's side).  Usually the Kula Deivam shrines will be in the ancestral village. If the family has migrated to several villages, then the shrine will usually be in the main village where the family originated from. Knowing your caste or clan background is also helpful in finding out more about your Kula Deivam. For females, they have an advantage. They also inherit the Kula Deivam from their matrilineal lineage (mother's side). So if you are a woman, your mother's Kula Deivam (from her mother) will continue to be present throughout your life. If you are married, your husband's Kula Deivam (from...
